About Mrs. Roberts Over the past decade of teaching, my feelings and beliefs on education have changed dramatically as I have gone from being an educator to being the educated. This is the realization I would hope all educators would find early in their career as it was one of the most difficult lessons I have learned while being the most fulfilling from a personal standpoint. Knowing how to take part in the education of my students has given me unprecedented personal growth and has enhanced my love of teaching immeasurably. Learning, even for an educator, is a life-long process that has taught me to be more adaptive to the needs of the students I teach. Capability It is my utmost belief that every child has the capacity to learn, achieve and succeed. The key is to learn how to speak to each child at the level he / she needs to bring to the surface the knowledge they are capable of expressing. Each planning session must reflect that need, so I am always conscious of learning styles. Being able to provide an environment suitable to the diverse learning styles has been my goal from my earliest days in college and that has not changed. This approach enables each child to learn at his / her peak ability. Discipline To have an effective classroom, discipline is necessary. Balancing direction and desire is the secret to providing a success learning environment. By clearly defining the boundaries expected by my students, I believe it enables them to learn in a thought provoking atmosphere while maintaining a connection to successful instruction. In such an environment, students can gain an understanding of how their actions affect a reaction. This also enables students to experience consequences, both positive and negative, for their actions. Responsibility being a foundation of success in life, students who are provided with a responsible learning context can be assured of achieving their ultimate goals of success. Knowing how to deal responsibly, even in failure means that they are empowered to understand the value of their decisions. Blame is never the objective, just the tool for moving in a more informed direction. Respect I encourage children in my class to understand that the classroom is a family. As such, differences of opinion are strong in children as they learn about their world, but respect is continually instilled throughout the learning day. Regardless of opinion, I try to encourage each child to treat opposing opinions, as well as the child expressing them, with respect. Lessons are tailored to meet that requirement while facilitating open exchange of ideas. Role Models It is my most fervent conviction that each teacher is a role model to his / her students. The relationship between teacher and student is a continual process of participation. This means a student is constantly observing his / her teacher to determine acceptable responses towards adults and other students. An awesome responsibility is placed on us as teachers to provide effective role models of what exemplifies good citizenship. Together I do not think of myself as an outstanding teacher, only as a student myself. I am learning from my students, my facility as well as my parents. This partnership of support ensures that each student is able to achieve his / her best. My partnership with other teachers and administration makes me a better teacher because only together does the whole faculty make an outstanding school. It is difficult, no impossible, to do everything by myself, I depend on the team of exceptional professionals to make a comprehensive approach to success. The Reward There is nothing in the world that I would prefer to be doing other than teaching. It provides me with uncompromised opportunity for personal growth. I could not imagine choosing another career that could be as rewarding. Daily, I know that I am going to receive an astonishing sense of gratification in my job, and I count this as a blessing everyday and look forward to tomorrow.
